A single stage furnace will deliver the same amount of heat and airflow at 100%, no matter what the temperature is inside or outside. A 2-stage furnace with a 2-stage thermostat will run at 67% or 100% (low burner, low airflow) and only go to second stage if the indoor temperature drops too low. This allows the furnace run in smaller capacity, providing greater air circulation, temperature control, and air filtration. The more your system starts and stops at 100%, the less control you will have of your home’s environment – and the less efficiently it works. The advantage of Trane’s 2-stage, variable-speed furnace is it has Comfort-R Technology, also known as Enhanced mode. This allows the heat exchanger to heat up first and the blower to slowly ramp up before blasting cold air into the home. In continual fan mode, the fan operates around 50% of the maximum air speed giving great air filtration and helping balance the homes temperatures. In cooling mode, this also provides greater humidity control, quieter operation, and maximum air circulation, temperature averaging, and air filtration.
The Top furnace is a Variable Capacity Furnace. This is not 2 stage, it is a furnace that has up to 60 stages ranging from 40% capacity to 100%. It delivers the most consistent temperature and control. The fan also ramps / modulates back and forth to the thermostat's demand for temperature. This uses a Trane thermostat for precision control.
